2021 Safety and Cultural Heritage Summit: 

Preserving Our Heritage and Protecting Our Health 

FREE Virtual Professional Development Seminar 

The 6th Annual Seminar will again be hosted by the Washington Conservation Guildthe American Industrial Hygiene Association Potomac Section, and the Smithsonian Institution’s Lunder Conservation Center, National Collections Program, and Office of Safety, Health, and Environmental Management.

Dates and Times:

Tuesday, 19 October 2021 (1:00 – 5:00 pm ET)

Wednesday, 20 October 2021 (1:00 – 5:00 pm ET)

Participants will hear collaborative presentations by OEHS and Collection Care professionals, with the theme of Control of Health and Safety Hazards in Museums, Libraries, Historic Sites, and Conservation Treatment.

Highlights include:

·       Panel on: Improving visual literacy skills to improve working safely.

·       Presentations on: Safe exhibit installation and visitor access; ergonomic challenges in conservation work; creating safe Covid-19 digitization practices for people and material culture; fire retardant coatings best suited to cultural heritage.

·       Collection Based Hazard Management studies: Comprehensive hazardous materials team policies, guidelines, and regulatory/licensed training; residual DDT, arsenic, other pesticides in archival/rare book collections; tin-mercury exposure assessment.

·       Virtual museum exhibits, including those related to worker health and safety.

Directions:

The meeting space is on the first floor of the Navy League Building. 

The Navy League Building is located across the street from the Courthouse Metro stop and between Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards, and between N Wayne and N Adams Streets. The lobby can be accessed through entrances on Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards.

Street parking in the neighborhood is free after 8:00 p.m.

The parking garage at 2300 Clarendon Blvd is free after 5:30 p.m. This garage entrance is on Clarendon Blvd, which is a one-way street running eastbound. 

The parking garage in the Navy League Building (2300 Wilson Blvd, garage entrance on North Adams Street) drops to $7 starting at 6:00 p.m. Before that it is $14, with rates slightly higher if you reserve online.
